Quick answer
Accident Claim Facts is an independent guide, run by the Accident Claim Facts editorial team, that explains what happens after a car, truck or motorcycle accident in each US state. We write for accident victims and their families, check every legal rule and number against an official source, and do not sell legal services, rank lawyers or promise outcomes.

Why this site exists#
After a crash, people face unfamiliar questions at a hard moment: how long do I have, who pays, what is my claim worth, do I need a lawyer? The honest answers depend on state law, and that law is scattered across statutes, court decisions and agency pages written for lawyers. Much of what turns up in a search is written to sell a consultation.
We wanted a calmer place to start: plain-English explanations of how claims work, with each state's deadlines and fault rules checked against the law itself and linked so you can read the source.
How we research and check#
Every legal rule and number on the site is stored once, in a facts table, with the official source it comes from and the date we checked it. Pages pull from that table, so when a law changes we update one record and every page that uses it changes too. We prefer primary sources: state legislatures' own statute pages, court decisions, federal agencies such as NHTSA and the Bureau of Justice Statistics, state transportation departments and state bar associations. When we cannot confirm a rule from an official text, we leave it out rather than guess. Our editorial policy explains the process in detail, and anyone can download the facts behind the site.
Who writes the guides#
Our guides are written and reviewed by the Accident Claim Facts editorial team, and each page shows the date it was last reviewed. We do not publish articles by law firms, invent experts or attach made-up author names and photos to our work.
What we are not#
We are not a law firm and not a lawyer referral service. Nothing on this site is legal advice, and reading it does not create a lawyer–client relationship. For advice about your own accident, talk to a licensed attorney in your state; our state guides list each state bar's own referral service and license lookup.
How the site is paid for#
The site may show clearly labelled advertising, which may include ads from law firms, insurers and medical providers. Advertisers never choose, review or influence what we write. Read our advertising disclosure.
